As is well known, titanium dioxide, in the presence of natural or artificial light, "activates" triggering a phenomenon called photocatalysis, which can help transform pollutants in the environment into harmless mineral salts. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles, thanks to the artificial or solar light, facilitate the chemical reaction in the molecules in the vicinity of the sink (photocatalysis): when the light hits the Titanium dioxide particle, it causes the formation of "hydroxyl radicals" on its surface. The radicals exert a very strong oxidizing power. This means that bacteria, viruses, fungi and polluting molecules, coming into contact with the radicals, begin to oxidize and degrade into harmless mineral salts. It is also important to know that radicals have a very short half-life (about 10-9 seconds) and therefore do not represent a danger to humans.
